Janann Sherman, Ph.D.

Ph.D. (Rutgers University). Professor of History at the University of Memphis for 19 years, the last nine of which she served as Chair of the History Department. Sherman has published eight books, including biographies of Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith (No Place for a Woman: A Life of Senator Margaret Chase Smith) and aviation pioneer Phoebe Fairgrave Omlie (Walking on Air: The Aerial Adventures of Phoebe Omlie), a history of woman suffrage (The Perfect 36: Tennessee Delivers Woman Suffrage), an exploration of the political philosophy of feminist Betty Friedan, and four volumes of Memphis history. Sherman retired in 2013 and now lives in Vinalhaven, Maine.
