While the federal budget and debt battles rage, similar scenarios are taking place in cash-strapped states across the nation. The Great Recession has left many states cash-strapped, and the federal budget spending cuts in education and health care spending have added to their budget woes. Expert Tracy Gordon says that while there are signs that states will recover, many remain in serious budget trouble. Many, she says, are seeking savings in pensions for state employees and public education.
