Russia’s growing presence and assertiveness in the former Soviet space and Eastern Europe has increased the sense of vulnerability for Moscow’s neighbors. In addressing this challenge, Japan, as a major global and regional power with both economic and strategic interests, provides a valuable partner for the United States and Europe.

On October 28, the Center for East Asia Policy Studies at Brookings held a public forum bringing together experts from Japan and the United States to discuss Russia’s actions on its eastern and western frontiers, and how they affect U.S. and Japanese interests. Panelists analyzed areas where United States and Japanese interests may diverge, and how both sides can encourage international stakeholders to identify common policies and develop effective implementation strategies.
