Digital innovation has the potential to drive greater global health and prosperity, yet it has also introduced profound governance challenges and ushered in a new era of geopolitical competition. From semiconductors to social media platforms, states and corporations alike now vie for control over nearly every layer of the global digital economy. Following the G-7 summit in the United Kingdom, the importance of that competition – particularly for the world’s leading democracies – is only set to grow.

On June 23, the Brookings Institution will host the Rt Hon Oliver Dowden CBE MP, the British secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, to discuss the bourgeoning competition over digital technology.  Drawing on the U.K.’s recent Integrated Review, the conversation will focus on how modern technology became a faultline of global competition, as well as the prospects for democratic cooperation.
