In the span of a few short years, the tea party movement has become a remarkable force in American politics, influencing elections and the debate over government practices and policies. Expert E.J. Dionne, Jr. says that the movement has pulled national politics to the right overall, and has added a vocal and extremely powerful far-right faction to the Republican Party, which he argues is a detriment to moderate Republicans and the party as whole.
For the first time, [the European Parliament elections] will be fought on European issues, not on national issues. [French President Emmanuel Macron and Italy's governing populists] represent two pure versions of what's going to be offered. [Europe is] now entering a phase where the political fight is in Brussels. It is now a place where you have parties and platforms, and the direction might shift very much if a new party wins.
