Raj Korpan is a nonresident fellow in the Governance Studies program at Brookings and an assistant professor of computer science at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY). Korpan directs the Trustworthy, Intelligent, and Explainable Robotics Lab which is focused on human-robot interaction (HRI), artificial intelligence (AI), and ethics. His research aims to develop sophisticated robotic systems that solve difficult real-world human-robot interaction problems. Additionally, he is committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in robotics and artificial intelligence. He co-founded the Queer in Robotics organization and organizes workshops on DEI in HRI. He has spoken on topics like inclusive robotics and AI’s impact on the queer community, and has been featured in CUNY TV’s “One to One with Sheryl McCarthy, The Foreign Press Podcast”, and Brookings Institution’s TechTank Podcast. He earned a B.S. in economics and finance from Bentley University in 2010, an M.S. in statistics from Baruch College, CUNY in 2015, and a Ph.D. in computer science from The Graduate Center, CUNY in 2021.
