Girls’ agency at the crest of the climate crisis
Content from the Brookings-Tsinghua Public Policy Center is now archived. Since October 1, 2020, Brookings has maintained a limited partnership with Tsinghua University School of Public Policy and Management that is intended to facilitate jointly organized dialogues, meetings, and/or events.
On January 18 and 19 the John L. Thornton China Center at Brookings and the China Institute for Innovation and Development Strategy hosted the second annual U.S.-China Strategic Forum on Clean Energy Cooperation, coinciding with the state visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Entitled “U.S.-China Relations in the Next Decade,” the 2011 Clean Energy Forum focused on the critical decisions that American and Chinese leaders face in the coming decades to address expanding energy needs within their own countries and internationally. The Forum featured keynote addresses by U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, President Obama’s Science Policy Advisor John Holdren, U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr., and China’s Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang.
The speakers highlighted common challenges faced by the United States and China—developing new energy sources, addressing global environmental concerns, and fostering greater cooperation and better relations between the two nations.
Working group sessions focused on topics such as clean coal technology, renewable energy options, U.S.-China cooperation on nuclear power, upgrading America’s clean energy infrastructure, and future prospects for clean energy cooperation between the United States and China.
Other distinguished speakers and participants at the Forum included: China’s National Energy Administration Director Zhang Guobao; China-U.S. Exchange Foundation President C.H. Tung; and Brookings’ Chairman John L. Thornton—among many other American and Chinese officials, corporate executives, policymakers, energy and climate researchers and academics.
