The Joint Select Deficit Reduction Committee, popularly known as the “super committee,” faces a Thanksgiving deadline to find deficit reduction measures of $1.2 to $1.5 trillion. If the committee can’t meet its target – or if the whole Congress fails to act on its recommendations by the end of the year – deep and painful cuts split between defense and domestic spending will automatically kick in under the new debt limit law. Congressional expert Sarah Binder has studied many past congressional committee and commissions with similar goals, and assessed their failures and accomplishments.
