The Status of Iraq: A Live Web Chat with Kenneth Pollack

Kenneth Pollack, director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, says that despite political problems, the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq is going smoothly and conditions in the country are improving. Pollack has recently returned from Iraq, where he observed the disarray of Iraqi politics and the improvement of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF). He notes in a recent trip report that recent political problems have not spilled over into significant violence.

Despite encouraging signs, Pollack says that Iraq remains highly vulnerable to the resurgence of civil war and that American troops are still essential for five key missions, including peacekeeping and counterterrorism.

On July 11, Kenneth Pollack answered your questions on the current situation in Iraq, in a live web chat moderated by POLITICO senior editor David Mark.
