China is facing serious environmental pollution and frequently occurring mass protests. As a result, the need to establish a set of environmental conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms to develop an effective solution is urgent.

On December 26, the Center for Industrial Development and Environmental Governance and the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy are co-hosting an event on the mechanism of environmental roundtable dialogue, featuring Wang Hua, chief expert of the Environmental and Economic Policy Research Centre at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, P.R.C, and Xu Jianhua, associate professor at the School of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University. The discussion will focus on the ideas and practices of environmental roundtable dialogue and its possible role in China’s environmental governance by looking into examples at the town, village and community level. Brookings Nonresident Senior Fellow Lan Xue will moderate the discussion.

Wang Hua received his Ph.D. in environmental management policy at University of North Carolina in the United States. He once served as the senior fellow of environmental economics in the Development Research Group at the World Bank, and the president of the Professional Association for China’s Environment. Wang Hua has long engaged in environmental economics and policy research, and has published a series of academic papers in the top international journals of environment, resources and ecological economics. In recent years, he has devoted his time to promoting the construction of China’s environmental protection institutions, especially in aspects of environmental information publicity, roundtable dialogue, public engagement, social governance and bottom-line policy.
