2025
The past two decades of financial history—a global financial crisis, a European sovereign debt crisis, a pandemic, bank failures on both sides of the Atlantic—underscore the importance of supervising and regulating banks and other financial institutions to reduce the risk of financial instability. The European Central Bank (ECB), in cooperation with national supervisory authorities, has supervised the eurozone’s major banks since 2014.
On April 25, Claudia Buch, who has been chair of the ECB’s Supervisory Board since January 2024, will present “Staying the course: safeguarding the stability of the global banking system” at the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at Brookings. Buch was vice president of the Deutsche Bundesbank from 2014 to 2023. A Ph.D. economist, she previously served on the faculty of several German universities and research institutions.
Following her remarks, Buch will join a conversation with Michael Silva—a former bank regulator, compliance officer, law firm partner, and bank board member—and Nicolas Véron, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and Bruegel. David Wessel, director of the Hutchins Center, will moderate.
