On November 5, the Foreign Policy program at Brookings hosted Vice President of the European Commission Kristalina Georgieva for a public address on Europe’s evolving foreign policy during a period of increasing turbulence. In her remarks, Georgieva explored challenges and opportunities facing the European Union, including the massive influx of migrants and refugees, growing security concerns, and a renewed need to affirm internal commitment to the European project.

Georgieva has served as EU commissioner for the budget and human resources and vice president of the European Commission since November 2014. Previously, she held the position of commissioner for humanitarian aid and civil protection from 2010 to 2014 in the second Barroso Commission. Bulgarian by nationality, Georgieva has been a committed international public servant, contributing to the efforts of the World Bank Group for 17 years.

Brookings President Strobe Talbott provided introductory remarks. Jeremy Shapiro, fellow in the Center on United States and Europe and Project on International Order and Strategy, moderated a question and answer session following Georgieva’s remarks.
