Just days before the end of its fiscal year, the Senate has cobbled together an agreement to keep the government funded and in operation for a week, avoiding a possible government shutdown and pushing further action on the budget into November. Many analysts saw the most recent crisis as unnecessary, and polls show sharply falling approval rates for Congress. Meanwhile, the country remains in an economic slump and many economists say congressional budget squabbles are exacerbating the problem.

On September 28, budget expert and former member of Congress William Frenzel took your questions about the dysfunction plaguing the congressional budget process and the consequences of persistent partisan gridlock. Vivyan Tran from POLITICO moderated.
