The U.S. Nuclear Weapons Cost Study Project was completed in August 1998 and resulted in the book Atomic Audit: The Costs and Consequences of U.S. Nuclear Weapons Since 1940 edited by Stephen I. Schwartz. These project pages should be considered historical.
Engineers with TRW inspect one of the company’s Defense Support Program satellites. These are deployed in geostationary orbits to detect the infrared heat signatures accompanying the launch of ballistic missiles and relay that information to U.S. military command centers. Other optical and electronic sensors are also carried aboard the satellites.
