What Will Happen With Health Care Reform Legislation?

With the Congressional district work period about to start, lawmakers were unable to meet President Obama’s deadline to pass health care reform legislation, but talks will continue in the fall. Senior Fellow Henry Aaron says differing opinions on everything from framing the issue to paying for reform make finding common ground difficult.

“During August, senators and representatives are going to go home. There’s going to be a very, very intense advertising campaign. The president and the administration are going to rev up the army of people who worked to elect President Obama. Those who are opposed, Republicans who see this as a critical issue, are going to work against it. Members of Congress will come back in September and they will have taken the pulse of the electorate and we’ll find out. I’m still, if I were a betting person, I would not take an even-money bet that this will succeed, but the president and his team have demonstrated that when they work hard to achieve an end, they have a formidable campaign apparatus and its going to be brought to bear.”
