Washington, D.C.—The Brookings Institution today announced the appointment of Pierre Nguimkeu as the new Director of the Africa Growth Initiative (AGI), housed within the Global Economy and Development program.

“Dr. Nguimkeu is a recognized and respected thought leader who brings a data-driven, empirical approach to research on Africa’s development challenges and opportunities, including how access to credit, kinship networks, and digital technologies can promote employment, entrepreneurship, productivity, and structural transformation,” said Brahima S. Dr. Nguimkeu joins Brookings following a distinguished career as a Professor in the Department of Economics and Director of the Master’s Program in Economics at Georgia State University since 2012.

Prior to this, he has held visiting and teaching positions with several institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, University of Chicago, Princeton University, Université Paris-Nanterre, and University of Ottawa, alongside project-focused work with the African Development Bank, World Bank, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), USAID, African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), and the Canadian International Development Research Center, among others.

Dr. Nguimkeu holds a PhD in Economics from Simon Fraser University, a Master of Economics from Université de Montréal, a Diplôme d’Ingénieur Statisticien-Economiste from ENSEA of Abidjan, and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Dschang.

“I am incredibly excited to be joining the Africa Growth Initiative at Brookings as Senior Fellow and Director,” said Dr. Nguimkeu. “This opportunity to work alongside such a talented and dedicated team of experts is both an honor and a privilege, and I am eager to contribute to this impactful mission. Africa is a continent of immense potential, full of opportunities for innovation and progress, yet facing complex challenges. I am deeply committed to addressing these challenges and working toward unlocking sustainable growth and prosperity in the region.”

The Africa Growth Initiative was established in 2008 to conduct high-quality policy research and analysis focused on attaining sustainable economic development and prosperity in Africa, while amplifying the voice of African experts in policymaking and planning.
