Every ten years, the United States Census Bureau reapportions the 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives to reflect shifts in population growth around the country. The past few decades have resulted in significant gains in representation in Congress for the South (particularly Texas and Florida) and the Pacific (California, primarily), at the expense of the Northeast and New England, with New York and Pennsylvania’s delegations shrinking significantly. The Midwestern states have also lost many seats in the House.
