A major forum on American cities and suburbs, sponsored by the Brookings Institution’s Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy, brought together more than 200 public and private sector leaders on May 28. Participants discussed the varied experiences of central cities, older suburbs, and outlying communities in creating metropolitan coalitions and the potential federal role in seeding, rewarding and enhancing these collaborations.
The National Issues Forum, entitled Forging Metropolitan Solutions to Urban and Regional Problems, was hosted by Brookings President Michael H. Armacost, who noted that the Urban Center’s location in the nation’s capital presents both a challenge to stay aware of trends around the country, and an opportunity to monitor the effects of federal policy on local efforts.
