Every day companies collect data about us and we depend on those companies to serve as good stewards of that data. But some violate that trust. To better describe this phenomenon Benjamin Wittes and Wells Bennett created the term “databuse”.
At an upcoming public event, scholars from the Center for Democracy and Technology and The Brookings Institution will expand on this concept and discuss the implications for policy. Wittes and Bennett will review their paper Databuse and a Trusteeship Model of Consumer Protection in the Big Data Era along with Justin Bookman the Director of Consumer Privacy Project at CDT. The panel will discuss the history of privacy policy in the United States and how to improve current privacy protections.
