The US is leaving Afghanistan, but is Iran?

The United States’ military engagement in Afghanistan is drawing to a close at the end of this year, and much of its political influence in that country will likely recede as well. But there are other players in the region, such as Iran, who will continue to play an important role in Afghan politics and society. In this week’s Foreign Policy Essay on Lawfare, Sumitha Kutty, a foreign affairs analyst specializing in Iran and South Asia, argues that Iran’s many interests in Afghanistan guarantee that it will remain engaged in that country long after the United States has left.
