The Death of Hugo Chavez and What it Means for the Future of Venezuela

The time is ripe for change in Venezuela, notes Nonresident Senior Fellow Diana Negroponte. Following the death of its president, Hugo Chavez, Venezuela has two objectives. It must elect new leadership and it must get its economy back on track. Despite its rich oil reserves, Venezuela is mired in a deep economic crisis shaped by its devalued currency and rising inflation. Vice President Nicolas Maduro has alarmed some onlookers with recent questionable tactics.
