Brookings Hosts Albright-Talbott-Ivanov Dialogue with Focus on Ukraine, U.S.-Russia Interests, and European Security

Brookings hosted a meeting of the Albright-Talbott-Ivanov Track II dialogue group on Friday, April 11. Led by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, the dialogue has met since 2009 to discuss key U.S.-Russia issues, with a focus on nuclear arms control and non-proliferation, often sharing its joint recommendations with the U.S. and Russian governments.

Given that the prospects for further U.S.-Russian arms control efforts will be affected by the broader atmosphere between Washington and Moscow, the April 11 meeting focused on the situation in Ukraine and its impact on the bilateral relationship and European security. The discussion produced a candid exchange of perspectives about recent developments in and around Ukraine and the difficulties they cause for U.S.-Russia and West-Russia relations. The participants hoped an early resolution of the Ukraine crisis could be found and that the United States and Russia could continue to cooperate on other issues where their interests converge.
