Chief Investment Officer
As the chief investment officer at Brookings, Catherine Piez is responsible for managing the Institution’s endowment. She works with the Investment Committee of the Board to set the portfolio’s long-term investment strategy and leads an internal team who conduct external manager research and oversee daily investment operations.
Prior to joining Brookings in 2006, Catherine was a research consultant and managing director in the marketable manager group at Cambridge Associates. In that role she met and analyzed hundreds of asset managers and published white papers for the firm’s clients on assets under management, quantitative investment, and indexing.
Raised overseas, Catherine learned the concepts of endowment management at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, a nonprofit focused on basic scientific research. Over the course of eleven years there, she grew from a staff accountant role implementing central administrative systems to the solo investment staffer reporting to the board on a full array of public, private, and hedged asset classes.
Catherine achieved the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1997. She is a member of the CFA Institute in Washington, D.C., and formerly served on the Annual Conference Planning Committee for the international organization. She also serves currently on the Board of Trustees for the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, and co-chairs its Finance and Investment Committees. Catherine’s undergraduate degree was in literature at Yale University.
