International Diversity Continues Rapid Increase in the Washington Area

March 1, 2002

This report is an update of a previous Washington Area Trends report, issue No.10, published at the end of 1999. General insights into the number and location of new residents from foreign countries can be obtained from public school enrollment reports because the Federal Bilingual Education Act requires that schools report the number of students enrolled each year who cannot participate in the regular curriculum because they have limited English proficiency.

The latest numbers show that the Washington area continues to be an attractive place to live for families from around the world.
