In the greater Washington area, federal
spending accounts for just under one of every three
dollars spent or about 32 per cent of the area’s
gross regional product. Moreover, even though
federal employment has declined by about 65,000
jobs since mid-1993, the share of the Washington
area’s economy accounted for by federal spending
has remained virtually unchanged in the 1990s.
