October 18, 2020

The Brookings Institution is saddened by the passing of Jim Johnson, who served as Chairman of the Brookings Board of Trustees from 1994-2003. “Jim had a passionate belief in the importance of public policy research to advance positive change in the world, from local communities to the global economy,” said Brookings Institution President John R. Allen. “His long-standing commitment to cities led to the founding of the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings. Jim left an indelible mark on the overall scholarship and impact of Brookings. On behalf of the Brookings community I offer my deepest condolences to Jim’s family, friends, and colleagues.”

Brookings Board Co-Chairs Glenn Hutchins and Suzanne Nora Johnson added, “Jim’s formidable intellect was matched only by his extraordinary generosity and his commitment to public service. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate Jim’s life and legacy of service and scholarship.”
