Zhu Rongji: Architect of a New, More Global China

For more than a decade, Zhu Rongji was a force in China’s political system. As vice premier from 1991 until 1997 and later as premier, he helped guide China from a planned economy to the market-based behemoth it is today. Zhu Rongji on the Record; The Road to Reform: 1991-1997 is a collection of more than 100 speeches and personal papers selected by Zhu and published by the Brookings Institution Press. Senior Fellow Kenneth Lieberthal says this volume, the first of two, is a revealing and insightful look at Zhu’s thinking and will lead to a greater understanding between the world’s two largest economic powers.
