The Future of Syria: A Syria Deeply Interview with Salman Shaikh

Content from the Brookings Doha Center is now archived. In September 2021, after 14 years of impactful partnership, Brookings and the Brookings Doha Center announced that they were ending their affiliation. The Brookings Doha Center is now the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, a separate public policy institution based in Qatar.

In an interview with Syria Deeply, Salman Shaikh discusses prospects of a U.S. strike against Syria, the heightened sense of anxiety by the Assad regime, and the rebel opposition’s capabilities and needs. Shaikh calls for the international community to develop a broader political strategy on Syria, emphasizing the need to develop policy that looks at the country’s future in the longer term and avoids weak political foundations evident in the recent cases of Iraq and Afghanistan.
