The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is spiraling out of control and may have already taken the region to the point of no return and toward full-scale war. Saudi Arabia has proposed that Israel withdraw from the territories captured in the 1967 Mideast war in exchange for neighborly relations with the Arab world. Will this provide an impetus for peace? Is there any hope for at least a cease fire?
Shibley Telhami of the Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution is an expert on international relations and ethnic conflict.
