Implementation of the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) 2009 (The Kampala Convention)

The African Union’s Kampala Convention on IDPs, the world’s first legally binding mechanism dedicated to serving internally displaced persons (IDPs), has been ratified by twelve African nations thus far. Dr. Chaloka Beyani, UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of IDPs, commends its potential to assist and protect Africa’s 6 million IDPs and calls for the remaining ratifications needed to enact the Convention.
