African Immigrants in Metropolitan Washington: A Demographic Overview

The number of African-born residents of the United States has grown considerably in recent years, comprising almost three percent of the total foreign-born population in 2000. Although the African population is small relative to most other immigrant groups, their numbers are growing, and Africans have become a noticeable presence in many U.S. cities. In this presentation, Jill Wilson describes the size, origin, and distribution of the foreign-born population from Africa living in the United States, with a particular focus on the Washington metropolitan area.
