Valentina Kalk Named Director of the Brookings Institution Press

September 23, 2013

Washington, D.C. — Valentina Kalk, former chief of United Nations Publications, will join the Brookings Institution as director of the Brookings Institution Press on September 23, President Strobe Talbott announced today.

Kalk will oversee the publication and dissemination of public policy books and journals which result from Brookings’s own research and from outside authors. While at UN Publications, Kalk not only bolstered traditional print-based book publishing but also transitioned the operation into a dynamic program including e-book components, and revolutionized marketing efforts, notably through the innovative use of digital tools.

“Valentina comes to us with substantial and diverse international experience in academic publishing, both in the public and private sectors,” said Talbott. “In the era of digital communications and social networking, we look forward to working with her to enhance the impact and marketing of the book culture which has long been a hallmark of Brookings.”

Prior to her work at UN Publications, Kalk spent nearly ten years at the World Bank pioneering new e-publishing initiatives, adopting new technologies and expanding strategic partnerships in developing countries.

Bob Faherty, former vice president and director of the Brookings Press, will remain affiliated with the institution as publisher emeritus. Since taking over the Press in 1984, Faherty introduced the acquisition of manuscripts from outside authors, and began the Press’ move into electronic publishing.

“We are incredibly grateful to Bob, who did so much to develop and protect our book culture over a remarkable 29 years of service,” said Talbott.

With Kalk’s arrival, former Marketing Director Chris Kelaher will continue to serve as associate director of the Press and will also assume the role of acquisitions editor. Rebecca Campany, who previously managed online communications strategy for the Office of Communications, will succeed Kelaher as marketing director.
