Peter Mandaville

Peter Mandaville was a nonresident senior fellow with the Center for Middle East Policy. He is a senior research fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs at Georgetown University and a professor of international affairs at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, where he serves as director of the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies. He is also an adjunct scholar with the RAND Corporation. From 2015 to 2016, he served as a senior advisor in the secretary of state’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, where his work focused on ISIS, countering violent extremism (CVE), and sectarian conflict in the Middle East. From 2011 to 2012, he was a member of the secretary of state’s policy planning staff where he helped to shape the U.S. response to the Arab uprisings. He has testified before congress on political Islam and appeared widely on national and international media outlets. He is the author or editor of several books including “Islam and Politics” (2nd edition, Routledge, 2014), “Politics from Afar: Transnational Diasporas & Networks” (Columbia University Press, 2012), and “Transnational Muslim Politics: Reimagining the Umma” (Routledge, 2001).
