World Trade and Global Governance: A Dialogue with the Former WTO Director General

On February 19, the School of Public Policy and Management of Tsinghua University co-hosted a lecture with the Brookings-Tsinghua Center of Public Policy and the Center for Industrial Development and Environmental Governance, featuring Pascal Lamy, former director general of the World Trade Organization.

In his lecture, Mr. Lamy stressed that world trade can become the engine of global economic growth, only when it is guaranteed by appropriate socioeconomic policies both domestically and internationally; and that the making of these policies requires intensive synergy between international players. In conclusion, Mr. Lamy pointed that global governance needs to be more effective and extensive to tackle the many challenges posed by the wave of globalization.

Research Fellow of the Development Research Center of China’s State Council Long Guoqiang shared his comments on Mr. Lamy’s lecture. After the remarks, Mr. Lamy took audience questions.

Mr. Lamy served two terms as director general of the World Trade Organization from 2005 to 2013. He is currently honorary president of Notre Europe – Jacques Delors Institute, president of the World Committee of Tourism Ethics, president of the Oxford Martin School’s Commission on future challenges, member of the Global Ocean Commission and of UNAIDS and Lancet Commission, chairman of the board of directors of the Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble (Orchestra Marc Minkowski), member of the board of directors of the Fondation nationale des Sciences politiques and of the Thomson Reuters Founders Share Company.
