What universities owe democracy

A conversation with Ron Daniels, president of Johns Hopkins University

Thursday, March 31, 2022

10:00 am - 11:00 am EDT

Democracy is under attack both at home and abroad. Colleges and universities play a unique role in strengthening democracy, yet their value is often overlooked. On March 31, Governance Studies at Brookings hosted a virtual fireside chat with Senior Fellow Elaine Kamarck and Ron Daniels, president of Johns Hopkins University and author of “What Universities Owe Democracy,” for a discussion on the relationship between liberal democracy and universities, the importance of civic education in democracy, how universities can create a shared sense of truth for the citizenry, and what more universities can do to promote social mobility and free speech on campuses.
