What is Religious Fundamentalism?
As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, many people in traditional societies have felt threatened by the encroachment of modernity. They have often responded by seeking a return to religion and traditional values. While widely noted within Muslim communities, all the major world religions are grappling with the phenomenon of “fundamentalism.” On February 22, 2012, the Project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World hosted author Karen Armstrong and Bishop John Bryson Chane, who discussed the history of fundamentalism, the challenges it presents within each faith community, and what can be done to alleviate the tensions between modernity and tradition.
