The boom in American oil and gas production over recent years has generated widespread discourse on U.S. energy security and policy moving forward. In its 2014 Annual Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts domestic crude oil production to nearly double from 2008 levels to 9.6 million barrels per day by 2019. The report also projects the U.S. will become a net natural gas exporter by 2018. This boom in domestic energy production has raised calls for a fresh look at existing U.S. strategies surrounding its resources.

On January 7, the Energy Security Initiative at Brookings hosted Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources ranking member Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) to discuss the future of U.S. energy trade and its implications on the domestic economy and national security.

William Antholis, managing director at Brookings, provided introductory remarks. He was joined by Charles Ebinger, senior fellow and director of the Brookings Energy Security Initiative, for a moderated discussion and audience Q&A following the senator’s speech.
