Where have the current account surpluses gone? Russia’s accumulation of foreign assets since the invasion of Ukraine
On February 25, the Center on the U.S. and Europe (CUSE) hosted Afghanistan’s Minister of Interior, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, for a public address on promoting good governance, fighting corruption and building the Afghan National Police.
Minister Atmar, widely considered one of the rising stars of Afghan politics, was appointed to his position last October and, during the recent deepening crisis, has devoted himself to the reform and strengthening of the Afghan National Police.
Minister Atmar has been integrally involved in the reconstruction of Afghanistan since shortly after the fall of the Taliban regime. He previously served as Afghan Minister of Education and as Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development. Prior to joining the transitional government, he served as Program Manager for the Norwegian Committee for Afghanistan and in 2002 he served as Deputy Director General of the International Rescue Committee. He is also the author of numerous works on development, NGOs and Afghanistan.
CUSE Director Daniel Benjamin introduced Minister Atmar, and Brookings Senior Fellow, Michael O’Hanlon moderated a question and answer session following Minister Atmar’s remarks.
