On December 6, the Center for Universal Education hosted an event on the promotion of girls’ education in India, Ethiopia and Pakistan. CUE’s three guest scholars presented their research on advancing quality education for girls in their respective countries following their participation in CUE’s Global Scholars Program. At the end of December, 2012, they will return to their home countries to embark on projects that seek to improve learning opportunities and outcomes for girls in their communities.

Urvashi Sahni presented a case study from her own work that illustrated the importance of empowerment education in order to produce learning and life outcomes for girls in India. Khadim Hussain described his work on creating inclusive environments and improving learning outcomes for girls and children with disabilities through community school networks based in Pakistan. Finally, Abraha Asfaw discussed gender inequalities at the tertiary level in Ethiopia and outlined specific competencies that promote the transition from secondary to tertiary education in order to help female students complete their university studies. Director and Senior Fellow Rebecca Winthrop moderated the discussion. The guest scholars’ research findings and intervention plans may be downloaded in PDF format here.
