Managing Global Insecurity Advisory Group Meeting: New York City

Monday, October 01, 2007

12:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT

On October 1, 2007, the Managing Global Insecurity (MGI) project convened its second Advisory Group meeting in New York City. The MGI Co-Directors introduced the concept of responsible sovereignty as a potential animating principle for a reformed multilateral security system. Participants discussed how this principle would apply in a multilateral response to combat climate change. The Advisory Group members and guest experts also debated a way forward on the “hard cases” within the international system, such as an effective multilateral strategy to manage the regional crises in the Middle East and a role for the United Nations in Iraq.

Advisory Group member Javier Solana chaired a luncheon session on “The U.S. and Multilateralism: Problems and Prospects” during which fellow AG members Ambassador Thomas Pickering and Sandy Berger made presentations. Over 50 Permanent Representatives and UN officials attended.
