Rodrigo de Rato, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), discussed progress in reforming the IMF in advance of the IMF/World Bank annual meetings, which were held in Singapore in mid-September. Mr. de Rato addressed specifically the IMF’s governance structure, reforms of surveillance, the IMF’s role in emerging markets, and its engagement with low-income countries. Looking beyond the annual meetings, Mr. de Rato discussed plans to further adapt the IMF to the new global economy. The event is part of the Brookings Institution’s 90th Anniversary Leadership Forum series.
