Content from the Brookings Doha Center is now archived. In September 2021, after 14 years of impactful partnership, Brookings and the Brookings Doha Center announced that they were ending their affiliation. The Brookings Doha Center is now the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, a separate public policy institution based in Qatar.

On January 13-14, 2018, the Brookings Doha Center (BDC) and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) convened prominent experts from MENA and China for an in-depth discussion of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Initiated by President Xi Jinping in October 2013, the BRI aims to direct considerable resources toward infrastructure projects, including railways, ports, pipelines, and utility and telecommunication networks across more than 60 countries. It also aims to establish the world’s largest platform for economic cooperation, including policy coordination and trade and financial partnerships running through Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), all the way to Europe.

In the interest of broadening the dialogue and disseminating the findings, the Brookings Doha Center published a summary of the proceedings in February 2019 from the Shanghai workshop.
