President Barack Obama will host the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit on August 4-6 in Washington, D.C. Billed as the first event of its kind, the summit’s theme is “Investing in the Next Generation.” Somalia is one African nation where both challenges and promises are numerous. The country is beginning to build a functioning state, while also working to defeat a well-resourced terrorist group. There are many questions to be answered in the time ahead, including: Can democracy deliver? How can Somalia be fixed from the inside-out and outside-in?

On August 8, the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at Brookings hosted a conversation with His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, president of the Federal Republic of Somalia, to explore the questions above, among others. Michael O’Hanlon, senior fellow and director of research for Foreign Policy at Brookings, held a question and answer session with the president.
