The British Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, the Right Honourable Nick Brown, MP, will deliver a public speech at the Brookings Institution covering a number of currently controversial topics, including food safety, genetically modified organisms, reform of the European Union?s Common Agriculture Policy, and enlargement of the European Union to include Eastern and Central European nations.

Following his formal remarks, the Minister will respond to questions from the audience of journalists, policymakers, Congressional staff members, and others interested in food, agriculture, bio-tech, and international trade issues.

It will be Brown?s only public appearance during a short official visit to Washington to meet with Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, other senior administration officials, and House agricultural leaders.

Brown was appointed to his current Cabinet post in July 1998. He has been a Member of Parliament since 1983.

His speech is part of the Brookings Policymaker Series, in which the non-partisan, independent research Institution uses its convening power to give officials of the U.S. and other governments a platform for discussing important and timely public policy issues.
