On September 28, the Latin America Initiative at Brookings hosted President Juan Orlando Hernández of Honduras for a discussion on strengthening democracy, stability, and security, focusing on the role of Honduras in the Alliance for Prosperity in the Northern Triangle. Brookings Vice President Martin Indyk provided introductory remarks and Latin America Initiative Director Harold Trinkunas moderated the discussion. Simultaneous interpretation was available.

President Hernández took office in January 2014, after campaigning on issues related to public security and economic development. He previously served as president of the National Congress of Honduras for four years and as congressman for the district of Lempira, where he focused on issues related to competitiveness, telecommunications, and public sector reform. Prior to entering public service, Hernández was a businessman with interests is tourism, radio and television.
