A Conversation with London Mayor Boris Johnson and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer

London and San Diego are high-growth cities with a shared focus on strengthening their global connections and competitiveness to ensure economic vitality and opportunity for their citizens.

Both also are participating in the Global Cities Initiative, an international network of metropolitan areas developing market-based strategies to achieve those goals.

On February 12, the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings hosted a conversation with London Mayor Boris Johnson and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer about the challenges of governing global cities for growth.

The mayors discussed strategies they are pursuing to build their traded sectors and advanced industry clusters, promote innovation, boost exports and international investment, enhance infrastructure, and leverage talent.

Peter Scher, trustee at the Brookings Institution and managing director at JPMorgan Chase & Co., opened the program and introduced the mayors. The conversation was moderated by Bruce Katz, vice-president and co-director of the Metropolitan Policy Program.
