July 12, 2007 —
In the lead up to the July 22 election in Turkey, Mark Parris joined Kemal Köprülü, President of the Advisory Board, ARI Movement and Dr. Ian Lesser, Senior Transatlantic Fellow, the German Marshall Fund of the United States. They discussed several key questions, such as: How will Turkey emerge from its current crisis? Will the July 22 vote indicate an affirmation of secularism or a turn to Islamism? How will this election affect the delicate relationship between Turkey and the Kurds of northern Iraq? How will these internal political factors affect strategic U.S.-Turkish relations, both bilaterally and regionally? In prepared remarks, Parris addresses these questions and expands on other ideas regarding the future of Turkish-U.S. relations.
