In his keynote presentation at the annual meeting of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, Christopher B. Leinberger reveals recent research and market findings from across the country pointing to the increased market demand for walkable urbanism—living, working and entertainment within a pedestrian environment provided by downtowns and similar places in American metropolitan areas. Leinberger focuses on where these trends have been occurring, how the redevelopment plays out on the ground, the steps that need to be taken to encourage redevelopment, the role of transit, "private/public" financing options and the new management models evolving to keep up with the growing consumer demands. In addition, the unintended consequences of downtown redevelopment is addressed; particularly affordable housing.
