The federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), one of President Bush's initiatives, was passed in 2002 with the goal of improving the performance of U.S. primary and secondary schools by requiring states to adopt comprehensive accountability systems for identifying and improving underperforming schools. The law is due for reauthorization and between inaction in Congress and President Obama's shift in education priorities, its future and its value seem uncertain.
