About Us

Greater Washington Research at Brookings, founded in 2001, is housed within the Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program. Our mission is to improve public policy in the region by identifying policy issues, presenting data and analysis of policy options, and convening leaders for focused dialogue. We seek to be a research and policy development resource and a catalyst for action for the city and region.

Our work covers a range of topics of importance to the area:

  • strengthening neighborhood development efforts
  • enhancing the quality of the District's public schools
  • reducing poverty, particular by improving workforce development programs
  • helping the city increase its overall population dramatically and thereby increase its tax base
  • increasing the provision of affordable housing
  • transforming the provision of primary health care
  • strengthening District fiscal management, especially as regards capital budgeting
  • tracking the migration of people into, out of, and around the region, especially between the city and the rest of the region

Greater Washington Research at Brookings is headed by Alice M. Rivlin, a Brookings Senior Fellow. Dr. Rivlin previously directed the financial control board that oversaw the District of Columbia's emergence from bankruptcy. She also was Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, Director of the US Office of Management and Budget during the Clinton Administration, and founding Director of the Congressional Budget Office. BGW receives its support from national and local foundations as well as project funding from government and other agencies.
